Is surfing banned in Reunion Island? It is regulated — and beginner lessons are possible in authorised, supervised settings.
Old headlines often describe a total surfing ban. Today’s practical answer is more precise: you cannot surf freely anywhere along the coast, but lessons can take place in authorised areas when the required safety system is operating and the conditions suit the students.
A 2013 headline saying that Reunion Island had banned surfing described the beginning of a major regulatory response. Later stories compressed a changing system into phrases such as “mostly banned”. Read as history, they are useful; read as a 2026 spot-opening guide, they are incomplete.
The accurate wording is: wave-powered activities are restricted in the coastal strip outside the legal exceptions. Authorised experimental or supervised zones can operate under specific rules. A surf forecast, map pin or famous spot name never replaces the day’s official status.
Misleading
“Surfing is banned everywhere”
The coast is not open for unrestricted surfing, but authorised frameworks and operating safety systems allow supervised practice in specific areas.

Incomplete
“Avoid murky water and you are safe”
Personal precautions do not replace the law, an authorised area or an active safety system. Risk can be reduced, never erased.

“Good swell means the spot is open”
Forecasts describe waves. They do not confirm legal access, operational deployment, visibility or suitability for a beginner.

How Zourit organises a beginner lesson
Étang-Salé is the usual starting point. Marin confirms the exact location and time after the morning operational information. If the system is not active or the ocean is unsuitable, the session is moved or postponed.
On the beach you receive equipment, a spot and safety briefing, and a short movement-and-breathing wake-up. In the water, you learn board control, position and paddling, then catch a wave lying down before attempting to stand. Standing up on day one is not an exam.
Swim 20 metres and put your head underwater without panic
Tell Marin confidentially about medical or physical concerns
Board, leash and rash vest included
Usual starts at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. when confirmed

Étang-Salé is not one single reef break
Some global surf directories label “Étang-Salé” as an exposed reef break. That may describe a particular wave, not every teaching area in the town. Zourit’s usual beginner approach is at Le Bord, with black volcanic sand and more direct access when conditions allow.
Saint-Leu is a different reef environment and generally involves more paddling. It is mainly organised on request for private lessons or groups, depending on the students, conditions and active system.

What international visitors should check before booking
TidyCal may display times in your device’s local time zone. Lessons take place in Reunion Island time, UTC+4. The final message from Zourit confirms the local time, location and meeting point.
Travel advice from the UK and Canada tells visitors to use designated or supervised areas and follow local authorities. That is also Zourit’s approach: local knowledge and qualified coaching complement official systems; they never override them.

Safety questions
Is surfing completely banned in Reunion Island?+
No, but it is strictly regulated. Surfing remains prohibited outside the legal exceptions and authorised settings. Always verify the exact zone and current operational status.

Yes, when the conditions and operating safety system allow it. Students must be able to swim 20 metres and put their head underwater without panicking.
Does a weather app confirm that the lesson will run?+
No. Forecasts do not confirm legal access or operational deployment. Follow Marin’s final confirmation message.
